Yeah, I was there

And it was cool. I'm ready to jump back in the fray. GAME O-ON!!! :)

I've been encouraged by the Programme Director of Peter's Place to apply for the recently opened Case Manager position. Everyone thinks I'm a grad student, even my peers. I grow less shameful by the fact I'm not one every day.

The average face of homelessness is not the charasmatic/crazy bum begging for your change everyday; it's a child under 18, with parents who couldn't afford to make rent (for various reasons). Peter's Place doesn't offer services for these particular individuals, but I wanted to attempt to clear up that very common misconception.

Peter's Place is a drop-in center (as opposed to a shelter that offers relatively "permanent" housing until you actually GET a house/apt) for homeless individuals over 55. It's in the basement of a church and offers meals to anyone who comes in (up to three meals a day), as well as art therapy services, a case manager who helps the client navigate the bureaucratic "underworld" and provides medical/psychological and shelter referals (within and without our expansive faith-based shelter network throughout the City) and assistance with getting Social Security and Veteran's benefits (and any other that apply), and has a visiting doctor twice a week (if not more). We have an on-site attourney to assist with appeals and eviction prevention.

I am well-liked within the organisation and regarded for my intelligence and abilities, not to mention everyone thinks I'm the CEO's favourite :P. They are eager to keep me on-board in whatever form available and I am eager to stay. I think I will submit an application and resume for the Case Manager position. It's funny, I thought my life was headed in a different direction; even though social work has always been an interest of mine, I've been seeking something more high profile in the last few years.
